K–12 libraries are essential learning environments that evolve alongside students’ developmental stages. Across elementary, middle, and high schools, libraries serve as centers for literacy development, independent learning, research, technology integration, curriculum repository and community interaction. The needs expressed by library staff across all levels highlight the importance of flexible design, strong sight lines, accessible technology, adequate storage, and welcoming atmospheres that support both academic and social uses.
While the character and intensity of use change from elementary to secondary levels, several themes unify K–12 libraries: the need for adaptable furnishings, safe supervision, diverse instructional settings, and dedicated space for both library functions and large-scale curriculum storage.
