Purpose
Provide a calm, supervised space where students can briefly regulate, de-escalate, or take structured mental health breaks without missing significant class time.
Activities
- Short supervised reset (5–20 minutes)
- Calming sensory activities
- Emotional regulation
- Transition support before returning to class
ConsiderationsÂ
- Soft lighting or dimmable fixtures
- Calming visuals or soundscapes
- Supervision from counselors or nearby staff—never unsupervised
- Not too large (large spaces attract misuse)
- Adjacent to counseling offices
- Visibility from doorways or internal windows for safety
- Can function as a shared internal courtyard-like space surrounded by counseling offices, as suggested in the Mesa model
