Purpose

Provide a calm, supervised space where students can briefly regulate, de-escalate, or take structured mental health breaks without missing significant class time.

Activities

  • Short supervised reset (5–20 minutes)
  • Calming sensory activities
  • Emotional regulation
  • Transition support before returning to class

Considerations 

  • Soft lighting or dimmable fixtures
  • Calming visuals or soundscapes
  • Supervision from counselors or nearby staff—never unsupervised
  • Not too large (large spaces attract misuse)
  • Adjacent to counseling offices
  • Visibility from doorways or internal windows for safety
  • Can function as a shared internal courtyard-like space surrounded by counseling offices, as suggested in the Mesa model
