Purpose

A developmentally appropriate environment emphasizing play-based learning, early literacy, motor skills, and social-emotional development.

Typical Activities

  • Whole-class carpet time
  • Play-based centers (library, block area, dramatic play, sensory activities)
  • Hands-on exploration involving water, art, and manipulatives
  • Eating inclement-weather meals or snacks
  • Small-group instruction and intervention
  • Outdoor learning transitions

Considerations

  • Two flooring types: 
    • Soft carpet area for group time
    • Hard flooring (LVT or Mondo) for crafts, meals, and messy activities
  • In-room sinks and drinking fountains (non-negotiable)
  • Direct access to a secure outdoor learning/play area
  • In-room restrooms for TK/K
  • Tables rather than desks
  • Built-in cubbies for backpacks, lunchboxes, and personal items
  • Soft seating and calming corner (with tactile tools, posters, pillows)
  • Library nook with low shelving and early-reader books
  • Substantial built-in storage for large primary curriculum materials and manipulatives
  • Walk-off mats at exterior doors
