Purpose
Local distribution nodes within buildings that connect classrooms and devices back to the MDF.
Activities
- Termination of wireless access point cabling
- Local routing/switching
- Storing AV system cabling
Considerations
- Network switches, patch panels
- Cooling (but less intensive than MDF)
- Secure access with minimal disruption
- Ideally not in classrooms (currently ~50% are)
- Avoid proximity to electrical transformers
- Use existing structured cabling (repurposed copper drops from pre-1:1 labs)
- Relocating IDFs requires abandoning and replacing all copper; thus, often cost-prohibitive unless part of building modernization.
