About

Purpose
Local distribution nodes within buildings that connect classrooms and devices back to the MDF.

Activities

  • Termination of wireless access point cabling
  • Local routing/switching
  • Storing AV system cabling

Considerations

  • Network switches, patch panels
  • Cooling (but less intensive than MDF)
  • Secure access with minimal disruption
  • Ideally not in classrooms (currently ~50% are)
  • Avoid proximity to electrical transformers
  • Use existing structured cabling (repurposed copper drops from pre-1:1 labs)
  • Relocating IDFs requires abandoning and replacing all copper; thus, often cost-prohibitive unless part of building modernization.
